Afton, VA – UnitedHealthcare Reverses Policy on Covering SMT for Headaches.

The American Chiropractic Association, Clinical Compass, the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, the American Black Chiropractic Association, and 38 state chiropractic associations came together last month to rally opposition to UHC’s policy and work to ensure patient access to chiropractors around the country.  The Unified VCA Board of Directors voted unanimously to sign the July 23rd letter to UHC’s President and CEO, Mr. Dan Schumacher.

The new policy denied headache sufferers the option to treat their pain without drugs using spinal manipulative therapy (SMT).  The letter to UHC President and CEO Dan Schumacher stated that the policy -- which denies coverage of SMT for headache treatment because it states it is “unproven and/or not medically necessary” – is flawed because UHC failed to include key studies in an analysis conducted in advance of its determination.  It urged UHC to withdraw its policy based on the most recent research, systematic reviews, and practice guidelines (including AHRQ), which support the use of spinal manipulation for the treatment of headache.
