Backpack Safety Awareness

Backpack Safety Awareness

Research suggests that a majority of today’s students are carrying more than the recommended weight levels and sustaining significant injury that may last a lifetime. The Unified VCA believes that it is imperative that doctors of chiropractic become involved with this growing epidemic and is providing tools and resources to make it easier for doctors to do so.

Want to help educate students, parents and teachers about the health issues associated with heavy backpacks and teach ways to carry backpacks correctly to prevent injury?  Opportunities include the following.

  • Provide patient education materials to your patients.
  • Hold “back to school” workshops.
  • Conduct presentations about the risks of backpack usage to your area’s school nurse coordinators, special education directors, and administrators who coordinate health services in Virginia schools.
  • Reach out to the human resources departments of area employers, parks and recreation services, kids’ clubs, parents’ groups, etc.
  • Contribute articles on the subject to your local publications.
  • Use your Facebook page and other social media tools to disseminate the information.

Presentation Support

Dr. Anna Bender, Unified VCA Education Committee Chair, has volunteered her time and expertise to assist UVCA’s efforts to increase backpack safety awareness in Virginia by developing materials and reaching out to schools.
