ECA-IPN/SecureCare: 2017 Wrap-up, 2018 Strategies

ECA-IPN and SecureCare Annual Wrap-Up from the Unified VCA

Dear Virginia Doctor of Chiropractic:

As we embark on 2018, the ECA-IPN leadership remains confident that SecureCare is making important inroads and optimistic that a significant “break” is just around the corner.

If you’re interested in detailed updates, check out the following.

1.      For a video update by Dr. Jay Greenstein and Dr. Eric Osterberg, [click here].

2.      For the comprehensive review of the ECA-IPN’s and SecureCare’s work on your behalf that appeared in the recent issue of The Virginia Voice, [click here].

While we are optimistic about the IPN’s and SecureCare’s progress, we also recognize that there are doctors who are concerned that SecureCare has not yet secured a major insurance contract in our region.  We have all been very clear since the beginning of this project that it would likely be three to five years before the fruits of our labors are seen.  The initial town meetings to announce the creation of the ECA-IPN, our agreement with SecureCare and to recruit providers started in November of 2014, so it has now been three years since we began inviting doctors to join into this effort.  Naturally we all hoped we would see results sooner, but we are still well within our estimated time frame.

The first round of marketing efforts to the major insurance payors in our region did not result in a major contract.  However, a great deal has been learned and significant inroads with the right contacts at the major health plans have been forged. These inroads are already serving us well as we continue to work to improve the practice environment for you and your patients.  ECA-IPN is clearly moving in the right direction.  Special thanks is extended to those ECA-IPN doctors who took a leap of faith and joined SecureCare early in the game.  Without your support, the ECA-IPN would not be this far along.

The most important thing that the ECA-IPN and SecureCare learned in the past year is that SecureCare needs more providers to meet the needs of our local health plans.  Because of this, we felt it was necessary to eliminate barriers and encourage more doctors to join.

  • Thus, start-up fees and the need to use a specific clearinghouse have both been removed.
  • There is no cost to join SecureCare and you have no obligation to accept any contracts that SecureCare makes available to you – but:

o   Joining SC gives you the opportunity to review and consider participating with each plan they make available, and

o   Your participation helps SecureCare as they approach potential business partners.

  •  [Click here] to join SecureCare and begin the credentialing process.
  •   (Note:  Founding Members who incurred a start-up fee to enroll in SecureCare will receive valuable added perks as contracts are realized.)

Allow me to clarify something that seems to come up a lot.

  • The ECA-IPN is the organization:

o   that is jointly owned by the Unified Virginia Chiropractic Association (UVCA), the Maryland Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association (PCA) and

o   that is currently working through a contractual agreement with SecureCare on your behalf.

  • Members of the Unified VCA (or MCA or PCA) automatically receive membership in the ECA-IPN, which streamlines the communications.
  • However, even if you are a member of the UVCA (or MCA or PCA), so already a member of the ECA-IPN, you still need to join and be credentialed by SecureCare in order to:

1.      increase the IPN’s attractiveness to insurance companies and

2.      have an opportunity to receive, review and consider contracts yourself.

  • There is no cost to join SecureCare nor is an application process required.
  • It’s important to understand that SecureCare is advocating on behalf of the ECA-IPN and they credential us in order to make our network attractive to payers.  If you have any questions about membership in the ECA-IPN, please email the Unified VCA’s executive director, Julie K. Connolly, FICC, at

The President of each state association acts as the association representative on the Board of Directors of the ECA-IPN. Thus, as UVCA President, I represent you on this board. If you have questions, please contact either Julie or me (

The Unified VCA, ECA-IPN and SecureCare look forward to making even greater progress in 2018 and to strengthening chiropractic in your state and beyond in fair, ethical, and rewarding ways.  In the meantime, we thank you for your support.
