Continuing Education

The complete requirements and forms required by the Virginia Board of Medicine are located here.

For your convenience, a few excerpted highlights from these regulations appear below – but these do not replace your complete review and understanding of the regulations provided via link above.

  • 60 hours of continuing learning activities are required every two years.
    • At least 30 of the 60 hours must be Type 1: clinical in nature and receives transcripts/documentation by an accredited chiropractic college. All 60 hours may be Type 1.
    • No more than 30 of the 60 hours may be Type 2: does not have to be clinical in nature or sponsored by an accredited chiropractic college, but considered by the learner to be beneficial to practice or to continuing learning. Physicians document their own participation in Type 2 learning activities.

  • The Continued Competency Activity and Assessment Form downloadable from the Board of Medicine web site must be used for recording continuing learning activities. The practitioner is required to retain in his or her records the completed form with all supporting documentation for a period of six years following the renewal of an active license.

  • Per Board of Medicine regulations, "A practitioner shall be exempt from the continuing competency requirements for the first biennial renewal following the date of initial licensure in Virginia."
